Currently, a lot of attention is devoted to the issues of caring for the privacy of users and protecting their data at all costs. Unfortunately, we often hear about unethical (and in fact illegal) proceedings of many corporations, which by their actions only confirm that information about us instead of being kept in a safe place freely drifting in the Internet space.
Thanks to The Wall Street Journal and the investigation carried out by the editorial office, it came to light that eleven applications for the iOS system sent Facebook users’ data without their consent. The editorial team contacted the New York regulator who has already sent a letter to the head of the platform.
We are not talking here about ordinary data, but about information that we would rather not like to share in public. The portal was sent things such as weight, BMI, menstrual cycles, alcohol consumption, calories consumed, blood pressure and calories burned during exercise. Most of the discovered applications are used to study physical activity and control health.
The letter addressed to Mark Zuckerberg first of all requires disclosure of information about all companies that have sent data to Facebook in the last three years. They were also asked to enter a category of data that was made available. The New York regulator also contacted the creators of controversial programs – some of them immediately stopped sending information about users under pressure.
Facebook has responded to the New York State Financial Services Department that it is reviewing the letter that has just been sent and states that developers must clearly inform consumers about information that is shared with the company. As you could guess, the company washes everything from everything.
